A few words about inspirations. The endless project BE FREE FOR ART

A few words about inspirations. The endless project BE FREE FOR ART

Painting begins with a spark, an idea, an impulse. Sometimes it seems as though the painting creates itself, intuition guides me during the process.

I chose themes that pervade everyday life, our constant battle with problems which we inevitably face. But also issues which haunt us for years, shaping our perspective on the world and building us as humans. I try to capture the moments of tension, the climax, and the spark before ignition. In trivialities as well as in big events I seek contrasts between imagination and reality. Our expectations and our anticipations are never what we finally meet in real life. This constant collision fascinates me. It’s irrelevant whether it’s beauty and ugliness, order or chaos- the points is, how it’s reflected in the mirror of my interpretation.

Your mirrored thoughts in my Art: an Interview with Maciej Hoffman

26 February 2010 by Maciej Hoffman

Interview by Olga Zapisek (Scene 360 Magazine)

[…] I come from a home “Tainted by art,” my dad was a sculptor, my mom was a painter. When I was young, the natural course of fate was antagonism to following in my parents footsteps. The result of this was a “troubled” childhood, and young adulthood dedicated to mathematics and physics classes, which were shortly followed by a philosophy major at ATK (Theological Academy in Wroclaw). The change came in my third year of college, when one day I started drawing. And since then I couldn´t stop. […]

Indepth Arts News: 8th Annual Art Inter-National Art Exhibition

9 January 2009 by Maciej Hoffman

[…] In his series “Marketing Civilization,” are observations of the contemporary style and content of life looked at from the perspective of the necessity and omnipresence of consumption. Our needs were mostly reduced to intellectually comfortable and psychologically exhausting contenting ourselves with the consumption of the world instead of giving something from ourselves to create the world. The artist safes the world

11 December 2008 by Maciej Hoffman

It is easy to dismiss the painting of Maciej Hoffman with a word “literary” which is offensive for the artist. That is because Hoffman demonstratively names his paintings giving them clear titles, in a way, which does not allow to avoid the suggested connotations. We are not only dealing with a clear plastic message, which attracts attention only with its form, line arrangement, proportions or colors, but also with a piece which appeals to the mind. It is not only about the aesthetic impression but also about the moral one.

Maciej Hoffman’s Bar Codes

10 September 2008 by Maciej Hoffman

The paintings by Maciej Hoffman presented this year in June in the “Na Solnym” gallery in Wroclaw represent a rebellion while questioning the consumer-centered reality. Behind it looms the dramatic and zealous question – Is the man dying between the symbolic of bar codes or maybe there is something that could save him? And if there is a way of salvation then where?…

Interview with Maciej Hoffman

6 June 2008 by Maciej Hoffman

Maciej Hoffman interviewed by Anna Leszkowska:

1. Fourteen years after graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław in both sculpture at professor F. Kocianowski´s and painting at professor K. Jarodzki´s workshops your works appear in public. What happened that only now you have begun to feel the urge to show your paintings to the world? Did you create in seclusion, hidden from the world, or have you only now returned to the artistic activity? Why did it take so long?

After graduating from the Academy I went through a stage of fascination with new technologies, possibilities of computer designing, creating a picture with use of photography and the computer. I was also absorbed by the world of advertisement communication, creating publications and ad spots. At an advertising agency we set up together with my fellow artists we learnt how to create an advertising message on “live organisms” of our customers who were learning about the “capitalist business”. Everything there was new and attractive. It was then that I let myself get fooled by the impression that the traditional techniques and the profession of an artist are heading for extinction. Opinions, impressions etc.

11 February 2008 by Maciej Hoffman

The paintings from the cycle “Marketing Civilization” are my own observations of the contemporary style and content of life looked at from the perspective of the necessity and omnipresence of consumption. Our needs were mostly reduced to intellectually comfortable and psychologically exhausting contenting ourselves with the consumption of the world instead of giving something from ourselves to create the world. Our everyday lives became dominated by work and pursuit of products attacking us from the store shelves and by the pictures that are generated for the needs of this invasion. The reality under the thumb of the economy gave birth to a culture which would rather sell images created by others than create its own ones.
